Bringing Indigenous Law Before the Courts

Meet and Greet: 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm at Native Law Centre
Panel Discussion: 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm, University of Saskatchewan, College of Law, Room 150
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls on lawyers and students to gain greater cultural competency training in, among other areas, Indigenous law. To further this call to action, the Canadian Bar Association Saskatchewan Branch – Aboriginal Law North Section and the University of Saskatchewan’s Native Law Centre present a panel discussion on Bringing Indigenous Law Before the Courts.
This panel discussion will be held on Monday, September 30, 2019 at the University of Saskatchewan, College of Law, Room 150 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. We invite the Honourable Justice Paul Favel, the Honourable Justice Sébastien Grammond and the Native Law Centre’s Executive Director, Marilyn Poitras, to discuss current understandings of Indigenous law, its sources and its reception in the courts.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Maria Campbell, Cultural Advisor and Sessional Lecturer with the University of Saskatchewan, College of Law and Shoshanna Paul, Chair, Canadian Bar Association Saskatchewan Branch – Aboriginal Law Section North.
We also invite all students and members of the Saskatoon bar to a Meet and Greet. The Meet and Greet will be held at the Native Law Centre from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Light refreshments will be provided, along with an opportunity to meet the Honourable Justice Paul Favel and the Honourable Justice Sébastien Grammond prior to the panel discussion.
