By Melanie Hodges NeufeldThe CBA Wellness Forum exists to help legal professionals manage personal, emotional, health and wellness challenges. The Forum provides professional development programs and research resources on mental health and wellness to give insights into the very real issues facing our profession. Professional development includes numerous recorded webinars and the Mindful Lawyer Series with topics such as:
- Module 1: Re-setting Your Priorities: How Can You Be a Happier Lawyer?
- Module 2: Mental Illness and the Legal Profession: Finding and Providing Support
- Module 3: Managing Stress, Thriving at Work and Achieving a Healthy and Balanced Lifestyle
- Module 4: Returning to Work after a Mental Health Leave: Re-entry Support
The CBA has also partnered with Bell Let’s Talk and the Mood Disorders Society of Canada to develop Mental Health and Wellness in the Legal Profession, an online course aimed at members of the legal community to raise awareness of these issues; help you understand the nature of depression and mental illness – what can trigger it, and its effects on the body and mind; and provide you with resources for prevention and treatment. The course is free and confidential. It is accredited by all of the provincial law societies, including Saskatchewan, for up to 6 hours of professional development (ethics credits). It’s a source of reliable information both for those who think they have a problem, and those who need or want to expand their knowledge in order to be able to identify issues when they arise.
